Types of Envirnmental Problems

Human beings have been causing the sadrifice of the environment since ancient times.
As a result, environmental problems have become very serious, and need urgent solutions.
Environmental problems can be classified into three part on the basis of how these things happen on a global scale.

First, air pollution is a serious environmental problem.
The most famous and worst air pollution was the London Smog Disaster.
It happened in 1952, and over ten tousand people died.
After the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution occered, and people started to use coal for fuel.
This led to an outbreak of smog, and people suffered from respiratory diseases.
National Institute for Environmental Studies says that developed countries are trying to solve this problem, but it is increasing in developing countries.

Second, the ecosystem is being disturbed.
All creatures play a role as producer and consumer in an ecosystem.
However, it is going wrong these days bcause of the act of human beings.
For example, the Atlantic gray whale became extinct because of too much huntings, and also the African elephant is one of the endangered species.
International Union for Conservation of Nature and National Resourses published Red List, and the official says, "a quater number of mammal have a risk of extinction."
To save these animals, human beings need to be involved in ecosystems.
It sounds a little bit strange, but it cant be helped because only human beings can protect engangered species from themselves.

Finally, the biggest present problem is global warming.
The main cause of global warming is greenhouse gas.
The emission of greenhouse gas is due to increased use of fossil fuel and deforestation.
As a result of global warming, temperatures rise and also sea levels go up.
Because of the rise of the sea level, Tuvalu, an island in the Atlantic Ocean, is sinking.
NGO Tuvalu Overview says "Tuvalu will disappear in the futere."
Also, global warming causes local downpours and tropical depressions.
Hurricane Katrina which occured on the southeast coast of Americaa in 2005 is still fresh in our memory; it affected the American economy.
According to the suvey by an American private insurance office, the amount of damage reached about twenty-five billion dollars.

Almost all of these problems are caused by human beings.
People cant live without the Earth.
People cant notice what is going on in the world if they live normally, but they should face environmental problems.
Then they should think about what they can do.
Srating is the most important.

should university students be required to do overseas volunteer work?

Many japanese students study abroad every year, but what about overseas volunteer work?
Japanese students seldom do volunteer work in japan or abroad.
University students should do overseas volunteer work.

There are two merits.
First, students can get job experiences before they get jobs.
they often imagine what kind of job they want to get, but it's difficult to know what exactly they do when they get jobs.
However, if they participate in volunteer work, they can know the real circumstances of it.
A participant who helped support refugees and immigrants in the USA says, "I realized that I only mind the name of the company or decency. I'd like to find the job I really want to get. It was good oppotunity to know what the job is."

Second, students can improve their communication skill.
No matter what country they go to, they have to speak english, so their english skill will improve.
Even if they cant speak local language, they can use english or body language.
Making themselves understood is very difficult and hard, but it makes them grow up.

However, there are also disadvantages of doing volunteer work abroad.
First, there are dangerous places.
Developimg countries require help, but these places are also dangerous.
The other day, an NGO staff member was killed in Afghanistan.
An NGO says, "it is no longer true that volunteer people are safe."
Even if students go there to help, it is possible foe them to be injured or killed.

Second, it's difficult for students to get used to new circumstances.
Food, customs, or view of lacaal people are fiddrent from Japan.
Also they may feel dtress because of thier job responsibility.
As a result, they may feel homesick.

There are surely some disadvantages, but university students should be required to do overseaas volunteer work.
They have a lot of time, so they should use it usefully.
They should grow up through volunteer work.
